The Corporate Social Responsibility of one of the leading telecommunication in Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria has once again showed the need to help people that face everyday challenges. Passion and outlook reflect off by the premier episode of the focused television series, Airtel Touching Lives, has continued to celebrate and assist beneficiaries.
Life in a rural community can be difficult and people still struggle to have a decent life, it is more difficult for people that are single and do not have support from their family; Hear the story of Mama Mercy who is a barren and has suffered most of her life as a result of rejection by her family and her community.
Life has been unbearable for Mercy Wbiabia from Nonwa, a rural community located outside Port Harcourt city, she is a considerable farmer who does not have a farm of her own. She lives in a mud house where part of the house has collapsed. She is struggling to look after herself and her sister son, Sunday Nomubari who is like a son that was left with her.
According to James Wbiloyii who nominated Mercy, he said whenever he travels home to meet his Aunt, she always tells him how she has been humiliated; intimidated; sometimes beaten and also robbed of her food. He said he nominated her in order for her to get help from Airtel Touching Lives programme. Nomubari was unable to complete his school because of money.
He is helping her because he was born out of wed lock and was left with her, he promised never to neglect her. Both of them were excited and very happy when Airtel Nigeria decided to support her and touch her life by giving and making her comfortable. Airtel has promised to build a one bedroom bungalow for her and she was given sixty plastic chairs; ten plastic tables and two canopies. She emotionally thanked Airtel and said she never imagine such great change can ever happen to her.
The second story in the episode is that of Akinwale Adesina who despite his own limitations, has been rendering a selfless service to train hapless youths in the community for free. Adesina was born and bred in Ogbomosho, Osun State. He went to primary and secondary school at Ogbomosho.
Unfortunately, Akinwale was unable to finish his secondary education due to family problems and financial issues but was encouraged by his mother who took him to a church where he assisted in organising computer centre named Glorious Computer Institute. He said he is always happy to teach children about computers.
